Explanatory Notes on Main Statistical Indicators
Total Population refers to the total number of people alive within a given area at a certain point of time. It can be divided into the permanent population and the population with residence registration according to different statistical coverage. The reference time of the statistics on total population is usually taken at midnight of December 31.
Proportion of Population Aged 0-14 (coefficient of child population or proportion of child population) refers to the proportion of population aged 0-14 in the total population during the same period of time. It is an indicator of age structure, usually expressed in percentage.
Proportion of Population Aged 15-64 (coefficient of adult population or proportion of adult population) refers to the proportion of population aged 15-64 in the total population during the same period of time. It is an indicator of age structure, usually expressed in percentage.
Proportion of Population Aged 65 and Over (coefficient of aged population or proportion of aged population) refers to the proportion of population aged 65 and over in the total population during the same period of time. It is an indicator of population ageing, usually expressed in percentage.
Proportion of Urban Population refers to the proportion of urban population in the total population during the same period of time. It is an indicator of population urbanization in a certain region, usually expressed in percentage.
Population Density refers to the number of people located in a given land area at a certain point of time, usually expressed in the number of permanent population per square kilometer.
Sex Ratio refers to the ratio of the male population to the female population among the total population (or population grouped by age), usually expressed in the number of males per 100 females. The following formula is used: Sex Ration=Number of Male Population / Number of Female Population ×100
Birth Rate (or Crude Birth Rate) refers to the ratio of live births to the total number of population alive (or average population, mid-year population) during a certain period of time (usually one year), expressed in ‰.
Death Rate (or Crude Death Rate) refers to the ratio of deaths to the average population during a certain period of time (usually one year), expressed in ‰. Death rate reflects the death intensity of the population during the same period of time.
Natural Growth Rate refers to the ratio of natural increase in population (number of births minus number of deaths) during a certain period of time (usually one year) to the average population of the same period, expressed in ‰.
Immigration Rate (Emigration Rate) refers to the ratio of the number of immigration (emigration) to the average population during a certain period of time (usually one year), expressed in ‰.
Total Migration Rate refers to the ratio of the total number of migration (number of immigration plus number of emigration) to the average population during a certain period of time (usually one year),expressed in ‰.
Net Migration Rate refers to the ratio of the net number of migration (number of immigration minus number of emigration) to the average population during a certain period of time (usually one year), expressed in ‰
Net Migration Rate across Province refers to the ratio of the number of immigration from outside the province minus the number of emigration to outside the province (including those going abroad) to the average population during a certain period of time (usually one year), expressed in ‰.
Total Dependency Ratio Total dependency ratio is also called total burden coefficient, refers to the ratio of the number of people of non working age (0-14 years old+65 years old and above) to the number of people of working age (15-64 years old) in the population, usually expressed as a percentage.
